Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe put close to $2 million into the mountain ahead of the 2026-27 season. The Tahoe Daily Tribune listed what it bought: a replacement main line for the snowmaking system, a new PistenBully groomer, restraint bars on every lift after The Chuter's summer retrofit, a redesigned Main Lodge lobby, a new e-commerce site, and an enclosure over the lift at the Wildslide Snow Tubing Park.
The snowmaking line and groomer matter most in November, when Mt. Rose competes to be the first Tahoe resort spinning lifts. The tubing upgrades serve the Friday-through-Sunday visitor who may never click into a binding. Galena Forest, Saddlehorn and Fieldcreek sit on the same highway as the Main Lodge, so both bets pay off more for them than for anyone driving up from the Bay Area.
The race Mt. Rose keeps winning in November
The resort posts its winter goal on its own snow report:
"Be the first resort open in Lake Tahoe, AND offer a quality ski experience from day one… meaning a we open one of our signature blue runs with 1000' vertical feet."
Two facts on the same page back that goal up. Mt. Rose has an 8,260-foot base, the highest in Tahoe, with slopes facing north and east. Its snowmaking can cover up to 28% of the mountain. Lately the goal has held:
| Season | Opening day | How local coverage described it |
|---|---|---|
| 2023-24 | Friday, Nov. 10, 2023 | First resort open in the Tahoe Basin, per the Tahoe Daily Tribune |
| 2024-25 | Friday, Nov. 8, 2024 | First Tahoe-area resort to open, per the Sierra Sun |
| 2025-26 | Friday, Nov. 21, 2025 | First Tahoe-area resort to open, per the Tahoe Daily Tribune |
Opening day moved by almost two weeks between 2024 and 2025, and the resort still opened first both times. In late 2025, the Reno Gazette-Journal listed several other Tahoe resorts with the same Nov. 21 date. Mt. Rose's 9 a.m. start still got it called first. A margin that small is why the snowmaking main line tops this year's list. On a mountain that bets its November on man-made snow, the main line is what carries the water.
As of the Tribune's Sept. 25 roundup, the 2026-27 opening date was still to be determined. The resort's snow report lists the conditions it needs before it can make snow: temperatures below freezing, ideally below 26 degrees, low humidity, low wind, and cold spells longer than four hours. The webcams and that snow report are the best way to see when those conditions have arrived.
The tubing hill gets the most visible upgrades
Wildslide is heading into its second winter. The Mynews4 report announcing the park in March 2025 described up to 20 lanes, each 750 feet long, with their own snowmaking and a conveyor lift. The park has its own parking lot, about three-quarters of a mile west of the Main Lodge entrance. The resort expected it to be the largest tubing operation on the West Coast.
This winter, the conveyor gets an enclosure so riders are out of the weather on the way up. The Wildslide Lodge also opens with food and drink, indoor seating, ticket sales and retail. Wind and cold riding up the lift used to be the hardest part of a tubing session. Now the lodge gives a family somewhere warm to wait between runs.
The basics, from Wildslide's own site:
- Address: 22600 Mt Rose Hwy, Reno, NV 89511, a separate address from the Main Lodge at 22222 Mt. Rose Hwy.
- Opening: Thanksgiving 2026, operating Fridays through Sundays, with Monday-through-Thursday slots for private events and group bookings.
- Sessions and pricing: Two-hour sessions start every 15 minutes. They cost $35 for ages 4 to 15 and $45 for ages 16 and up.
- Rules: Riders must be at least 4 years old and no more than 250 pounds, and children ride on their own in their own tube.
- Reservations: Not required for individual day sessions. Required for groups and buyouts.
Wildslide's pages currently list two different sets of daily hours and last-session times, so check the pricing page before heading up.
For a household in Saddlehorn or Fieldcreek, walk-up two-hour sessions change what a tubing outing takes. With no reservation to book, it fits into a Saturday afternoon once the snow looks good. That suits visiting grandchildren or out-of-town guests who don't ski.
Smaller changes inside the Main Lodge
The rest of the list shows up more quietly. Guest Services and season-pass sales have moved as part of the lobby redesign, which the resort says improves flow through the space. The rental shop has new equipment options, and the new e-commerce site promises smoother transactions. Every lift now has restraint bars, following The Chuter's retrofit over the summer.
In October 2026, the resort's season pass page lists adult 2026-27 passes at $1,175 for Premier, $975 for Classic, $775 for Off-Peak and $425 for Select. The homepage had announced that rates would go up on October 1. If you don't buy a pass, the Local Sunday deal requires ID showing you live within a one-hour drive. It isn't offered during holiday periods, and the page doesn't list a fixed price.
The calendar from the lower canyon to the summit, through year's end
The ski season frames the winter, but some of the best dates between now and New Year's are farther down Mt. Rose Highway, at Galena Creek. Here they are in order:
- Friday, Oct. 23, 5 to 9 p.m. The Moment Skis Factory Kick Off Party, at Moment Skis in Sparks, appears on Mt. Rose's calendar.
- Saturday, Oct. 24, 8:30 to 11 a.m. The Mt. Rose Job Fair is at the Main Lodge. The resort recommends applying online beforehand.
- Friday, Oct. 30, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The fifth annual Galena Creek Fall Festival takes over the Galena Creek Visitor Center with pumpkin activities, live music, vendors, food, crafts, games and raffles, then fire pits and s'mores after dark. The same evening, the UNR Ski Ball runs from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Downtown Events Center Ballroom in Reno.
- Saturday, Nov. 14. Washoe County's Galena Creek Trail ranger walk starts from Phillip and Annie Callahan Park, 15960 Callahan Road. The county has moved it to this new date.
- Thanksgiving weekend. Wildslide's posted opening.
- Sunday, Dec. 6. Bobo's Fall Demo at the Main Lodge, where attendees can try out gear.
- Saturday, Dec. 12, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Santa Ski 2026 brings a mass ski-down, hot chocolate and an ugly-sweater contest. Skiers dressed head to toe in holiday wear get a discounted lift ticket. A Santa hat alone doesn't count.
- Dec. 28 to 31, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Galena Creek Visitor Center's four-day Winter Exploration Camp, at 18250 Mount Rose Highway, offers guided hikes, wildlife tracking, science experiments and outdoor games. Sledding and snowshoeing depend on the snow.
The Visitor Center at 18250 Mount Rose Highway and the Main Lodge at 22222 sit on the same road, with Wildslide just past the Main Lodge at 22600, and from Thanksgiving through Dec. 31 all three have something on the calendar.
